Early and late stent thrombosis in patients with vs without diabetes mellitus following percutaneous coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs Dec 09, 2018

Yuan J, et al. – Given that unpredictable in-stent thrombosis is a major concern with drug-eluting stents (DES)—especially in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM)—researchers systematically evaluated patients with and without DM following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with DES to compare early and late stent thrombosis. They analyzed randomized controlled trials or observational studies that reported acute and sub-acute/early and late stent thrombosis in diabetic individuals vs non-diabetic individuals following PCI with DES. Overall, 18,910 individuals were included. Findings revealed a similar rate of early stent thrombosis following PCI with DES in both patients with and without DM. However, DM was found to be related to a remarkably higher rate of late stent thrombosis.
