Early and late population-based thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm outcomes following endovascular and open repair
Journal of Vascular Surgery Sep 26, 2019
Rocha RV, Ouzounian M, Al-Omran M, et al. - Researchers performed a population-based study of patients receiving endovascular or open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) in Ontario in order to determine the in-hospital and long-term outcome of endovascular and open TAAA repair. Among 664 adults who underwent surgical repair of a TAAA, the endovascular approach was undertaken in 303 adults and open approach was undertaken in 361 adults. In the matched sample, they observed a higher incidence of in-hospital death, thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm life-altering events, discharge to rehabilitation facilities, and longer median length of stay in correlation with open repair. They observed improved early mortality in correlation with endovascular repair that diminished after 1 year. A higher rate of secondary procedures was observed following endovascular repair. Irrespective of repair technique, poor long-term survival following TAAA repair was evident.
