Early-age onset colorectal neoplasia in average risk individuals undergoing screening colonoscopy: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Gastroenterology Jun 15, 2021
Kolb JM, Hu J, DeSanto K, et al. - In view of an increasing incidence and mortality linked with early age onset colorectal cancer (EAO-CRC), professional society recommendations lowered the screening age in average risk individuals. Researchers herein investigated the yield of screening individuals < 50 years old. Performing a systematic review of 3 databases from inception through July 2020 yielded 10,123 unique articles; of these, they included 17 studies, including 51,811 average-risk individuals from four continents. Individuals aged 45-49 had incidence of advanced colorectal neoplasia similar to that observed in those aged 50-59. This suggests that screening expansion to this population could yield similar impact on colorectal cancer risk reduction.
