Dyspnea in patients receiving noninvasive ventilation for acute respiratory failure: Prevalence, risk factors and prognostic impact – a prospective observational study
European Respiratory Journal Jul 13, 2018
Dangers L, et al. - In this study based on secondary analysis of a prospective observational cohort study in patients who received ventilatory support for acute respiratory failure (ARF) in 54 intensive care units (ICUs) in France and Belgium, researchers determined the prevalence, intensity and prognostic impact of dyspnea in patients receiving noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) for ARF. For measuring dyspnea, they used a modified Borg scale. Findings revealed a frequent incidence of dyspnea in patients receiving NIV for ARF. Moreover, these subjects developed intense dyspnea. A higher risk of NIV failure and poorer outcome were found in relation to dyspnea occurrence in these subjects.
