Dysphagia and oral morbidities in chemoradiation-treated head and neck cancer patients
Dysphagia Apr 11, 2018
Ihara Y, et al. - Using a battery of swallowing measures and measures of oral morbidities related to chemoradiation (xerostomia, mucositis, pain, taste/smell, oral moisture), experts gauged the connections between oral morbidities and swallowing ability in head/neck cancer patients following chemoradiation therapy (CRT) and at 3 months following CRT. A notable deterioration was illustrated in the swallow functions and oral morbidities after CRT with incomplete recovery at 3 months post-treatment. Yielded data disclosed different patterns of relationships between swallow function measures and oral morbidities at the 6-week compared to the 3-month assessment point. This, in turn, exhibited that different mechanisms possibly served as contributory factors for the development than the maintenance of dysphagia over the trajectory of treatment in these patients.
