Dyslipidemia is associated with pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Journal of Clinical Lipidology Apr 09, 2018
Dowla S, et al. - The metabolic characteristics of children with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) differing in race/ethnicity were studied via a retrospective chart review conducted at a tertiary referral university hospital. Additionally, associations between dyslipidemia and NAFLD were also investigated. Study participants (mean age 12.5 + 3.4 years) were 64% male; 63% White, 23% Hispanic, and 14% Black. A high prevalence of cardiometabolic derangements, especially dyslipidemia, was noted, which varied based on race/ethnicity, in children with NAFLD. A possible essential role of serum triglycerides and non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol in the pathophysiology of pediatric NAFLD was suggested.
