Dyskalemias and adverse events associated with discharge potassium in acute myocardial infarction
American Heart Journal Jun 28, 2018
Xu H, et al. - Researchers determined the incidence of dyskalemias and related outcomes among real-world acute myocardial infarction (AMI) survivors. They used the SWEDEHEART registry to identify consecutive survivors of an AMI from 2006-2011 with plasma potassium at discharge (exposure). The 1-year risk of death, new MI, heart failure, and de novo atrial fibrillation were assessed. Demographics, comorbidities, hospital procedures, and medications were included as covariates. They found that both hyper- and hypokalemia were frequently detected among AMI survivors in a real-world setting. Their occurrence, as well as the 1-year risk of death, was strongly predicted by discharge potassium and kidney function.
