Dysglycemia among youth with type 1 diabetes and suboptimal glycemic control in the Flexible Lifestyle Empowering Change trial
Pediatric Diabetes Feb 16, 2019
Kahkoska AR, et al. - In the Flexible Lifestyle Empowering Change trial, researchers investigated the prevalence and correlates of non-severe hypoglycemia in adolescents with type 1 diabetes and suboptimal glycemic control. In 233 adolescents at baseline, 7 days of blinded continuous glucose monitor data were analyzed. Findings suggested an association of long duration of clinical hypoglycemia and clinically serious hypoglycemia with older age and decreasing hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c]. In addition, long duration of clinically serious hypoglycemia was related to insulin pump use. According to findings, almost 80% of adolescents with elevated HbA1c had an episode of clinical hypoglycemia, and >50% had a week of clinically severe hypoglycemia. Increased education alongside access to new technologies for diabetes can help prevent hypoglycemia and improve glycemic control.
