Duration of type 2 diabetes and remission rates after bariatric surgery in Sweden 2007–2015: A registry-based cohort study
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Nov 28, 2019
Jans A, et al. - In the present study, researchers examined how T2D duration influences the chance of achieving remission of T2D after bariatric surgery. From the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry, they assessed 8,546 adult patients with T2D and BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 for this nationwide register-based cohort study; these patients received primary bariatric surgery in Sweden between 2007 and 2015. At 2 years and 5 years after surgery, 76.6% (n = 6,499) and 69.9% (n = 3,765) of patients were free from diabetes medication, respectively. In this study, an inverse association was noted between remission of T2D after bariatric surgery and duration of diabetes; the highest remission was observed among patients with recent-onset and those without insulin treatment.
