Duration of type 2 diabetes and remission rates after bariatric surgery in Sweden 2007–2015: A registry-based cohort study
PLoS Medicine Nov 29, 2019
Jans A, et al. - In this registry-based nationwide study, 8,546 people with T2DM who underwent bariatric surgery in Sweden between 2007 and 2015 were involved in order to investigate the association between preoperative diabetes duration and the probability of attaining diabetes remission following bariatric surgery in a large nationwide patient population. Complete remission of T2D was attained in 58.2% (n = 2,090) and 46.6% (n = 681) at 2 and 5 years, respectively. The probability of obtaining complete remission associated negatively with the duration of diabetes, insulin treatment, age, and HbA1c at baseline, however, it was greater among males and individuals with higher BMI at baseline. Thus, remission of T2D following bariatric surgery was inversely related to the duration of diabetes and was most eminent among people with recent-onset and those without insulin treatment.
