Duration of symptom relief and early trajectory of adverse events for oral NSAIDs in knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 30, 2019
Osani MC, et al. – Researchers assessed 26,424 participants to quantify the efficiency and adverse event (AE) trajectories of oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in knee osteoarthritis. They observed moderate, statistically significant effects of NSAIDs on pain that peaked at 2 weeks, but the significance of the effects diminished over time. A significantly higher incidence of gastrointestinal AEs in NSAID users was reported vs placebo users as early as 4 weeks. The investigators suggested to weigh the durability of efficacy with the early onset of minor AEs along with tolerability and preferences of the candidates while formulating an NSAID regimen.
