Duration of respiratory failure after trauma is not associated with increased long-term mortality

Cook MR, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort study including trauma patients admitted from 2011 to 2014 in a level 1 trauma center, to test the hypothesis that respiratory failure duration in trauma patients is associated with decreased 1-year survival. They used the Washington state death registry to calculate mortality. Survival was compared between short (≤ 14 d) and long (> 14 d) ventilation groups by using a Cox proportional hazard model. To describe the respiratory failure and mortality link, they generated a receiver operator characteristic. Findings revealed that in the critically injured, there was no association of duration of mechanical ventilation with 1-year mortality. For predicting long-term survival, duration of ventilation following injury should not be used.
