Duration of neonatal intensive care unit exposure associated with decreased risk of atopic dermatitis
Pediatric Dermatology Mar 03, 2021
Schoch JJ, Miranda N, Garvan CW, et al. - In this single‐center retrospective study, researchers sought to explore the infant and environmental factors that may contribute to the relationship between prematurity and atopic dermatitis, including mode of delivery, birthweight, gestation, and duration of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Four thousand sixteen mother‐infant dyads were involved. Infants were at higher risk of developing AD if they were delivered vaginally, did not stay in the NICU, had a longer gestation, or had a higher birthweight. The authors concluded that infants had a lower chance of developing AD if they had a longer stay in the NICU.
