Durability of antibody levels after vaccination with mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in individuals with or without prior infection
JAMA Jan 06, 2022
Zhong D, Xiao S, Debes AK, et al. - In this study, a longitudinal cohort was examined for SARS-CoV-2 spike IgG antibodies and comparison of antibody durability was done between individuals who received an mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine with or without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection.
A convenience sample of 3,500 healthcare workers was enrolled and followed-up.
A total of 1,960 health-care workers provided serum samples at least 14 days after receipt of the second vaccine dose; previous infection was evident in 73 (3.7%) of these individuals.
There were higher spike antibody measurements of healthcare workers with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection followed by 2 doses of mRNA vaccine (3 independent exposures to spike antigen) compared with individuals with vaccination alone.
In this study, a longer interval between infection and first vaccine dose seemed to correlate with enhanced antibody response which is in line with work comparing extended vaccine dosing intervals.
