Duodenal L cell density correlates with features of metabolic syndrome and plasma metabolites
Endocrine Connections Apr 27, 2018
van Baar AC, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, experts attempted to determine fasting plasma metabolites that correlated with duodenal L cell, K cell and delta cell densities in individuals with metabolic syndrome with ranging levels of insulin resistance. A correlation was demonstrated between duodenal L cells, plasma metabolites, and clinical characteristics of metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it was determined that duodenal L cells connected with plasma metabolites that were implicated in human glucose metabolism homeostasis. Findings displayed that disentangling the causal relation between L cells and these metabolites could assist in improving the (small intestinal-driven) pathophysiology behind insulin resistance in human obesity.
