Dual-energy CT detection of cardiovascular monosodium urate deposits in patients with gout

JAMA Sep 18, 2019

Klauser AS, Halpern EJ, Strobl S, et al. - Researchers examined whether patients with gout could be distinguished from controls via dual-energy CT (DECT) detection of microscopically proven cardiovascular monosodium urate (MSU) deposits. In this prospective Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant study, they included 59 patients with gout and 47 controls who presented to a rheumatologic clinic from January 1, 2017, to November 1, 2018. In addition, they assessed 6 cadavers by DECT for cardiovascular MSU deposits and verified these by polarizing microscope. Patients with gout displayed cardiovascular MSU deposits in higher the frequency than controls and the frequency was correlated with elevated coronary calcium score. These findings support the efficacy of a relatively new imaging modality (DECT) in differentiating cardiovascular MSU deposits from calcium deposits without the need of contrast that might impact the treatment of patients with gout at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
