Drug use is associated with lower plasma magnesium levels in geriatric outpatients; Possible clinical relevance

van Orten-Luiten ACB, et al. - The researchers investigated the relationships between drug use and plasma magnesium (Mg) in a cross-sectional study of 343 Dutch geriatric outpatients according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification system. Polypharmacy and several medications were found connected with hypomagnesemia (plasma Mg <0.75 mmol/l and <0.70 mmol/l) in the aged population especially in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and in side-effects of proton pump inhibitors and calcium supplements.
