Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) in the pediatric population: A systematic review of the literature
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Jun 07, 2020
Kim GY, Anderson KR, Davis DMR, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to analyze available data on drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) in the pediatric population. A systematic literature review was conducted for pediatric (aged < 18 years) patients with DRESS. Eighty-two articles with 148 patients were included; of which, 97.9% had a skin rash, and the liver was the second most common organ involved (84.5%). Data reported that the mortality rate was low (3.0%). Multiorgan failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome were included complications. Findings suggested that pediatric DRESS usually involves the liver. The prognosis is commonly good with treatment, but serious complications may occur. Corticosteroids may serve as an effective, valuable treatment for pediatric DRESS, possibly in conjunction with intravenous immunoglobulin in severe cases.
