Drug-coated balloon vs plain old balloon angioplasty in femoropopliteal disease: An updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Mar 10, 2019
Anantha-Narayanan M, et al. - In this meta-analysis of 22 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), with 3,217 patients involved, researchers compared drug-coated balloon (DCB) to plain balloon angioplasty (POBA) in femoropopliteal disease (FPD). These RCTs were identified from 5 databases including EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web-of-Science from January 2000 to September 2018. They used Cochrane's Q-statistics to determine heterogeneity. Random effects model was also used. They found that improved vessel patency and a lower risk of target vessel revascularization (TLR) was reported in relation to use of DCBs vs POBA in patients with FPD; this was particularly seen in the setting of in-stent restenosis (ISR). DCB and POBA did not yield different mortality outcomes.
