Drowning injuries in the United States: Patient characteristics, mortality risk, and associated primary diagnoses
Injury Aug 15, 2020
Ryan KM, Dugas J, Pina T, et al. - Using 2016 National Inpatient Sample Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality dataset, researchers assessed admitted drowning patients in the US for determining patient demographics, associated primary diagnoses, mortality risk, and inpatient mortality among these patients. Among 4,355 assessed admissions in 2016, inpatient mortality of 8.2% was identified. Downing admissions and deaths, in majority, were reported among younger, male and white patients. Death was reported for a significantly larger proportion of Medicaid patients compared with inpatient mortality of those with other insurance. For drowning patients, the most common linked primary diagnoses included the pulmonary and renal systems.
