Drinking and intimate partner violence severity levels among U.S. ethnic groups in an urban Emergency Department

Academic Emergency Medicine Feb 06, 2019

Caetano R, et al. - Researchers surveyed patients at an urban emergency departments (EDs) to examine ethnic-specific 12-month rates of physical, intimate partner violence (IPV) by severity and their association with drinking and other sociodemographic and personality correlates in an urban ED sample. Findings revealed considerable variation in IPV rates across ethnic groups in the sample. Compared with Asian (13%) and Hispanic (15%) individuals, higher rates were evident among black (34%), white (31%), and multiethnic (46%) individuals. Respondents’ drinking was not identified to be associated with IPV. In line with prior literature, results for ethnicity suggested a higher tendency of black than Hispanic people to report IPV.
