Drink types unmask the health risks associated with alcohol intake – Prospective evidence from the general population

Clinical Nutrition Feb 19, 2020

Schutte R, Papageorgiou M, Najlah M, et al. - Since there is still doubt about the effect on population health of low to moderate intake of different types of drinks, researchers studied the relationships of different drink types in the form of beer/cider, champagne/white wine, red wine and spirits with various health outcomes. Over 500,000 candidates were selected to the UK Biobank cohort. In continuous analysis after eliminating non-drinkers, beer/cider and spirits intake correlated with an increased risk for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular events, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and cancer, on the other hand, both champagne/white wine and red wine related only to a reduced risk for ischemic heart disease. The results do not support the notion that alcohol from any type of drink is good for health. Consumption of low levels of beer/cider and spirits already associated with an increased risk for all health outcomes, while wine only showed opposite protective relationships with ischemic heart disease.
