Double plastic stenting for inoperable malignant biliary stricture among cirrhotic patients as a possible cost-effective treatment: A pilot study
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Jul 16, 2019
Radwan MI, et al. - Researchers conducted this multicenter study to evaluate the impact of insertion of two plastic stents in inoperable malignant biliary stricture in cirrhotic patients regarding stent patency, quality of life (QOL), and cost. The study sample consisted of 72 cirrhotic patients (mean age was 70 years) presented for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with an inoperable malignant biliary stricture. In 25% and 8% of cases, cholangitis and pancreatitis were reported. Among cirrhotic patients with inoperable malignant biliary obstruction, double plastic stenting of the common bile duct appears effective at six months of follow-up. In addition, improving laboratory findings and QOL among those patients with an acceptable cost also seems valuable.
