Double-inversion recovery with synthetic magnetic resonance: A pilot study for assessing synovitis of the knee joint compared to contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging
European Radiology Apr 06, 2019
Yi J, et al. - In this pilot study, researchers examined the agreement for the evaluation of knee synovitis between double-inversion recovery (DIR) with synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and T1-weighted contrast-enhanced (CE)-MRI. Thirty patients were compared with T1-weighted CE-MRI and synthetic MRI. By using CE-MRI as a reference standard, the accuracy of synthetic DIR image was calculated. According to findings, synthetic DIR imaging exhibited a moderate degree of interobserver agreement and good accuracy compared to CE-MRI for detecting synovitis and might facilitate evaluation of certain regions of peripatellar synovitis. No significant difference was found between T1-weighted CE-MRI and synthetic DIR imaging in assessing presence of synovitis in knee joint. It may play a role in imaging degenerative joint disease or larger cohort scientific studies where gadolinium application is not feasible, although it has limitations.
