Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial comparing the effects of antithrombin vs placebo on the coagulation system in infants with low antithrombin undergoing congenital cardiac surgery
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Aug 08, 2018
Jooste EH, et al. - Authors sought to ascertain the impact of precardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) normalization of antithrombin levels in infants to 100% on heparin sensitivity and anticoagulation during CPB and if those effects can be seen in the postoperative period. Without increased rates of bleeding or adverse events, heparin sensitivity and anticoagulation during CPB was improved by supplementation of antithrombin in infants with low antithrombin levels. Researchers noted beneficial effects were seen into the postoperative period. Significantly less postoperative bleeding and exposure to blood products and reduced generation of D-dimers reflected these effects.
