Dose–response association between physical activity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A case–control study in a Chinese population

Li YF, et al. - In this case-control study involving 543 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), defined as fat accumulation in more than 5% of hepatocytes, without competing liver disease like viral hepatitis or autoimmune hepatitis, and 543 age-matched and sex-matched controls, researchers examined the dose-response association in a Chinese population between physical activity [plays an important role in the development of NAFLD] and NAFLD, taking into account confounding variables like energy intake and sedentary time. In a dose-dependent manner, physical activity was inversely related to NAFLD risk in men. Investigators found that vigorous-intensity and moderate-intensity physical activity, independent of sedentary time and energy intake, were both beneficial to NAFLD.
