Dog ownership at three months of age is associated with protection against food allergy
Allergy Jul 12, 2019
Marrs T, et al. - In this secondary cohort analysis in the Enquiring About Tolerance study, researchers focused on the role of pet ownership in the prevention of food allergy. A total of 1303 three-month infants were enrolled. Via a survey, information regarding domestic animal ownership was obtained. At enrolment, atopic dermatitis (AD) was examined in participants. Through skin and serum testing at 3, 12 and 36 months, sensitization to foods and aeroallergens was determined. They found that 6.1% (68/1124) of participants with complete data received a diagnosis of food allergy. A 90% decline in the odds of infants developing food allergy was reported in relation to living with dogs, after adjusting for familial atopic disease, maternal dog/cat sensitization and participant AD. Overall, experts concluded that food allergy could be prevented by dog ownership in infancy.
