Does very high surgeon or hospital volume improve outcomes for hemiarthroplasty following femoral neck fractures?
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 15, 2019
Clement RC, et al. - In this study of 48,809 people of hemiarthroplasty ≥ 60 years old identified in the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System 2001-2015 dataset, experts assessed whether very high-volume hip arthroplasty providers had lower complication rates compared with other relatively high-volume providers. Among very high-volume hemiarthroplasty surgeons or hospitals, a clinically significant volume-outcome relationship was not recognized. Whilst previous evidence demonstrated that outcomes could be improved by avoiding very low-volume providers, these results recommended that complications would not be further decreased by directing all hemiarthroplasty individuals to very high-volume surgeons or facilities.
