Does treatment strategy influence the ability to achieve and sustain DMARD-free remission in patients with RA? Results of an observational study comparing an intensified DAS-steered treatment strategy with treat to target in routine care

Arthritis Research & Therapy May 14, 2019

Burgers LE, et al. - Researchers examined how treatment strategy influence the achievement and sustaining of disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD)-free remission in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Among the 279 RA patients (median follow-up 7.8 years) studied, 155 patients participated in a disease activity score (DAS) < 1.6 steered trial aimed at DMARD-free remission. Outcomes revealed that more DMARD-free sustained remission could not be achieved using intensive treatment, compared to routine up-to-date care. As per data gained, there appeared a tendency towards an effect of intensive treatment in anticitrullinated protein antibody-positive RA; however, further investigation on this topic is recommended.
