Does serum albumin explain observed racial disparities in mortality for cancer patients undergoing esophagectomy?

Sabra MJ, et al. - Researchers investigated if nutritional status, as reflected by preoperative albumin, could explain the higher mortality rate seen in African Americans with esophageal cancer vs Caucasians esophageal cancer esophageal cancer. They studied 3,228 patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between 2005 and 2015 from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. As per findings, race independently forecasts mortality for patients undergoing esophagectomy. Preoperative albumin does not explain the disparities among esophagectomy patients.
