Does reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for proximal humeral fracture portend poorer outcomes than for elective indications?

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Aug 07, 2020

Crespo AM, Luthringer TA, Frost A, et al. - Researchers here compared clinical, functional, and radiographic outcomes in patients receiving reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) for the treatment of acute fracture vs those undergoing the procedure for degenerative conditions. Querying a prospectively collected database, they assessed data of 1,984 patients meeting the inclusion criteria; of these, 1,876 formed the elective group and 108 formed the fracture group. Observations revealed comparable outcome and complication profiles between patients undergoing RTSA for acute fracture and those indicated for the treatment of degenerative conditions of the shoulder despite the presence of differences in patient demographic characteristics.
