Does Ramadan fasting affect hydration status and kidney function in CKD patients?
Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Apr 01, 2018
Hassan S, et al. - Researchers determined the impact of the Ramadan fasting on hydration status, plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels, and kidney function in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) grades 2–4. In this prospective cohort study, they noted that fasting throughout the month of Ramadan did not significantly deteriorate renal functions in patients with CKD grades 2–4 and appeared reasonably safe. Among fasting patients, a significant increase in serum urea levels was noted during the last week of fasting, which returned to basal levels at 4 weeks after the end of the Ramadan month.
