Does hemophilia increase risk of adverse outcomes following total hip and knee arthroplasty?: A propensity score-matched analysis of a nationwide, population-based study
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 28, 2019
Wang SH, et al. - Through a retrospective cohort study on 121 patients who had hemophilia and who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between 2000 and 2015, the researchers assessed the risk of adverse outcomes in such patients. In comparison to patients without hemophilia, patients with hemophilia had an extended length of hospital stay and greater total hospital charges. An apparent clinical difference in 1-year infection rates following THA was recognized, however, the analysis was limited by the small sample size. Other comparable postoperative complications and mortality rates were noted. Hence, the counseling of hemophiliacs regarding an 8% infection rate following THA should be done. Also, in an attempt to reduce the rates of transfusions and related adverse outcomes in patients with hemophilia undergoing THA and TKA, further investigation for the development of prophylactic and effective methods is needed.
