Does exercise affect bone mineral density and content when added to a calorie- restricted diet? A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials
Osteoporosis International Oct 22, 2021
Yazdanpanah Z, Beigrezaei Z, Mohseni-Takalloo S, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain the effects of exercise in conjunction with weight-loss diets on bone health.
The systematic review included 14 eligible controlled clinical trials in adults investigating the effect of adding exercise to a weight-loss diet vs a calorie-matched weight-loss diet without exercise on bone measures.
In conjunction with hypocaloric diets, resistance exercise was reported inducing positive effects on total BMD when compared with an energy restrictive diet alone.
Overall only resistance exercise appears to have beneficial effects on total BMD during a calorie-restricted diet in adults.
