Does early-onset asthma increase childhood obesity risk? A pooled analysis of 16 European cohorts
European Respiratory Journal Sep 20, 2018
Contreras ZA, et al. – Researchers investigated the association of early-onset asthma and related phenotypes with the risk of developing childhood diabetes in 21,130 children born 1990-2008 in Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. They identified a higher risk for obesity among children with active asthma (wheeze in the last 12 months and physician-diagnosed asthma) vs those without wheeze and asthma. Findings suggested a possible contributing role of early-onset asthma and wheezing to an increased risk of developing obesity in later childhood.
