Does binge drinking between the age of 18 and 25 years predict alcohol dependence in adulthood? A retrospective case–control study in France
BMJ Open May 10, 2019
Tavolacci MP, et al. - In this investigation, researchers ascertained if frequent binge drinking between the age of 18 and 25 years is a risk factor for alcohol dependence in adulthood. The study sample consisted of 166 adults aged 25-45 year in whom alcohol dependency was diagnosed by a psychiatrist. From 18 to 25 years of age, frequent binge drinking was found to be a risk factor for adult alcohol dependence. According to this retrospective case-control study, prevention measures for pre-adulthood binge drinking, particularly frequent binge drinking, should be implemented to prevent acute consequences (eg, injury and death) and long-term consequences (eg, alcohol dependence).
