Does age influence patient reported outcomes in unilateral primary total hip and knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 11, 2020
Joly D, Ludwig T, Mahdavi S, et al. - This research sought to evaluate the effect of age on patient-reported results after unilateral primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Researchers conducted a retrospective review of available data in the affiliated institute’s Data Repository. Researchers distinguished a total of 53,498 unilateral primary THA and TKA between April 2011-2017. Individuals were categorized by age into 3 categories: < 55, 55-70, and > 70. They obtained WOMAC and EQ-5D Canada scores at pre-surgery, 3 and 12 months post-operatively. The outcomes of this study demonstrated that individual age should not be a deterrent when considering the impact of age on patient-reported results, while a multitude of factors goes into quantifying successful THA or TKA.
