Does administration of haloperidol or ketorolac decrease opioid administration for abdominal pain patients? A retrospective study
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jun 02, 2019
Heard K, et al. - Researchers examined if the use of i.v. opioids could be lowered via administering haloperidol or ketorolac in patients with non-specific abdominal pain. In this retrospective cohort study of 11,688 adults (Age 18–60) with non-specific abdominal pain, 4091 received one or more doses of an i.v. opioid, 240 received haloperidol and 1788 received ketorolac. Observations revealed no correlation of haloperidol with decreased i.v. opioid use. They noted a modest decrease in i.v. opioid use in correlation to ketorolac. They recommend considering the use of haloperidol and ketorolac as potentially beneficial in some cases, however, high-quality studies are needed before these can be recommended as standard therapy.
