Do surgical helmet systems affect intraoperative wound contamination?: A randomised controlled trial
Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Oct 20, 2017
Shirley OC, et al. - This inquiry was set up to find out if surgical helmet systems (SHS) increase wound contamination in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Furthermore, placing tape around the gown/glove interface was tested as a strategy to attenuate this contamination. Findings reported no difference in wound contamination between surgical gowns (SG) and SHS. Notably, contamination rate did not alter as a result of adding tape at the gown/glove interface. This study suggested that cost, comfort and personal protection must be kept in mind while opting surgical gown as no evidence reported that wound contamination rates will be altered.
