Do patients with cellulitis need to be hospitalized? A systematic review and meta-analysis of mortality rates of inpatients with cellulitis
Journal of General Internal Medicine Jul 24, 2018
Gunderson CG, et al. - Researchers carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the mortality rate of patients hospitalized with cellulitis and whether the rate was comparable to the rate for low-risk patients with community acquired pneumonia that were currently recommended for outpatient management. Findings revealed that the estimated mortality rate for subjects currently being hospitalized for cellulitis was comparable to the mortality rate of subjects with community-acquired pneumonia recommended for outpatient management by the Pneumonia Severity Index and CURB65 prediction models, as well as strongly endorsed by major infectious disease societies. They suggested that outpatient management of these subjects could result in large cost savings and may be preferred by patients.
