Do corticosteroid injections before or after primary rotator cuff repair influence the incidence of adverse events? a subjective synthesis
Arthroscopy Feb 12, 2020
Kunze KN, Mirzayan R, Beletsky A, et al. - This study was conducted to ascertain the influence of corticosteroid injection (CSI) before or after primary rotator cuff repair (RCR) on the risk of revision RCR, retears, and infections. Researchers searched the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases by the 2009 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis statement. The research population consisted of 10 studies including a total of 240,976 individuals. The data showed that the use of preoperative CSI could be correlated with an improved risk of revision RCR. No conclusive data was found to imply an increased risk of retear or infection with CSI use based on a subjective synthesis of ranges. No definitive recommendations can be made on perioperative CSI use for RCR because current literature is limited and heterogeneous.
