Do competing causes of mortality contribute to overdiagnosis in lung cancer screening
Lung Cancer Jan 06, 2021
Durham DD, Croswell JM, Marcus PM., et al. - This study was attempted to evaluate whether competing causes of mortality contribute to overdiagnosis in lung cancer screening. Researchers analyzed time from screen-detection to death among 35 participants in the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) low-dose computed tomography arm with screen-detected lung cancer who died of non-lung-cancer causes. After screen detection, deaths due to non-lung cancer causes soon were uncommon, arguing against the widespread competing cause of mortality (CCM) overdiagnosis in the NLST. Given the higher prevalence of comorbidities, it was indicated that CCM overdiagnosis is likely seen more often in community-based screening .
