Distribution patterns of foot and ankle tumors: A university tumor institute experience
BMC Cancer Jul 21, 2018
Toepfer A, et al. - Experts provided comprehensive information on the occurrence and distribution patterns of foot and ankle tumors in a university tumor institute and to propose a simple definition to facilitate comparison of future investigations. Of the assessed tumors, 36% were soft tissue tumors, of them 71% were benign, and 29% were malignant. Of the assessed tumors 64% involved bone, and among them 87% were benign and 13% were malignant. Chondrosarcoma was by far the most common malignant bone tumor, and the most common benign osseous tumor lesions included simple bone cysts, enchondroma and osteochondroma. Common benign soft tissue tumors were pigmented villo-nodular synovitis, superficial fibromatosis and schwannoma, while the most common malignant members were synovial sarcoma and myxofibrosarcoma. For the affected patient, delayed diagnosis and inadequate treatment with serious consequences could be led by unawareness.
