Distinct uric acid trajectories are associated with different risks of incident hypertension in middle-aged adults

Mayo Clinic Proceedings Apr 04, 2019

Ma H, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers identified common uric acid (UA) trajectories in middle-aged adults (aged between 30 and 60 years) and analyzed their correlation with hypertension risk. The study sample consisted of 5758 participants without hypertension on or before June 1, 2011. In both men and women, five distinct trajectory groups of UA were detected: low-stable, low-increasing, moderate-increasing, high-decreasing, and high-stable. During a median follow-up of 5.9 years, 284 women developed hypertension and 674 men developed hypertension during a median follow-up of 5.9 years. There was no substantially increased risk in the high-decreasing group. Overall, the investigators suggested that distinct UA trajectories were related to risk of hypertension in middle-aged adults differently.
