Distinct patterns of daily glucose variability by pubertal status in youth with type 1 diabetes

Diabetes Care Jul 21, 2019

Zhu J, et al. - In children with type 1 diabetes, researchers assessed glycemia and glucose variability metrics and patterns of 24-hour glucose variability based on pubertal status. Glycemia metrics, glucose variability, and glucose patterns were evaluated using 4 weeks of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) information from 107 youth (aged 8 to 17 years) with type 1 diabetes for ≥1 year. Investigators found that prepubertal youth had more A1C-independent glucose variability than pubertal and postpubertal youth. Findings revealed that A1C by itself does not reflect the full spectrum of glycemic parameters, highlighting CGM's added insight into the management of type 1 diabetes among youth.
