Distal radius and tibia bone microarchitecture impairment in female patients with diffuse systemic sclerosis
Osteoporosis International May 03, 2019
Sampaio-Barros MM, et al. - In female diffuse systemic sclerosis (dSSc) patients, researchers analyzed volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), microarchitecture, and biomechanical parameters at the distal radius and tibia with high-resolution peripheral computed tomography (HR-pQCT, XtremeCT) and recognized clinical and laboratory variables related with these parameters. At distal radius and tibia, 38 women with dSSc and 76 healthy controls had HR-pQCT done. Compared to healthy controls, density, microarchitecture, and biomechanical parameters at the distal radius and tibia were significantly impaired in dSSc patients. According to findings, bone microarchitecture exhibited impairment of trabecular and cortical bone at distal radius and tibia in patients with dSSc, analyzed through HR-pQCT. Prognostic factors of this bone impairment could be variables associated with hand involvement (acroosteolysis, quality of life-grip strength, and range of motion) and disease duration.
