Disseminated histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent individual diagnosed with gastrointestinal endoscopy: A case report
BMC Infectious Diseases Dec 05, 2019
Dang Y, Jiang L, Zhang J, et al. - Given the rarity of disseminated histoplasmosis and its lesions in the gastrointestinal tract in the immunocompetent individuals, researchers here presented the case of a 44-year-old immunocompetent Chinese man who presented with fever, hepatosplenomegaly, fungal esophagitis and protuberant lesions with a central depression and erosion along the mucous membrane of the colon. Gastrointestinal endoscopy led to the diagnosis of disseminated histoplasmosis in this patient. The patient showed significant improvement following the application of amphotericin B deoxycholate. Based on this case, they recommend considering histoplasmosis in patients with fever and hepatosplenomegaly and taking actions to avoid its disseminated infection associated with high mortality.
