Dissection of the inferior mesenteric vein vs of the inferior mesenteric artery for the genitourinary function after laparoscopic approach of rectal cancer surgery: A randomized controlled trial
BMC Urology Aug 10, 2019
Pallisera-Lloveras A, Planelles-Soler P, Hannaoui N, et al. - Through a prospective, randomized, controlled study of 90 individuals who underwent laparoscopic total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for rectal cancer with rectal adenocarcinoma with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, researchers contrasted pre- and post-TME sexual dysfunction, depending on the surgical approach practiced in the inferior mesenteric vessels ie, either directly on the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA), or from the inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) to the IMA. Researchers intended to illustrate that the dissection route from the IMV towards the IMA favors the maintenance of the pelvic autonomic nerves and hence, decreases rates of sexual dysfunction following surgery.
