Disruption of sleep-wake continuum in myotonic distrophy type 1: Beyond conventional sleep staging

Bonanni E, et al. - An exploration was carried out of the sleep disruption in myotonic dystrophy type I (DM1) individuals in order to determine more refined sleep variables with the aid of nocturnal polysomnography and multiple sleep latency test. A narcoleptic-like phenotype was brought to light in DM1 with a significant rapid eye movement (REM) sleep dysregulation, which was possibly responsible for daytime sleepiness, along with increased sleep instability and impaired delta power dissipation which appeared to be peculiar of the disease.
