Disparity in outcomes for adolescent and young adult patients diagnosed with pediatric solid tumors across 4 decades

American Journal of Clinical Oncology Apr 30, 2018

Chen I, et al. - Using the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, a comparison was conducted of adolescent and young adult (AYA) and pediatric overall survival (OS) in the most common pediatric extracranial solid tumors. Enrollment consisted of patients (age, 0 to 39 years) diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, neuroblastoma, osteosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and Wilms tumor. It was observed that AYA patients had significantly worse OS vs pediatric patients for the most common pediatric extracranial solid tumors. Improvements in therapy have resulted in gains in survival for pediatric patients, yet AYA patients have not seen such gains over the same period, with the exception of osteosarcoma.
